KORYAK RESERVE
The area of the Koryak Reserve is 327 156 hectares, including a marine area of 83,000 hectares.
The area of the protection zone is 676,062 hectares.
Objects of protection
The purposes of creation of the Koryak Reserve are to preserve, study, control the state of the peculiar natural complex of the north of Kamchatka - the so-called Beringian forest-tundra; mass habitat of waterfowl; rivers of the reserve with their largest spawning grounds of salmonids; coastal Bering Sea ecosystems with large seabird colonies; preserve the deer pastures in the south of the Parapole valley and, at the same time, the traditional way of life of the small peoples of the North.
The main objects of protection of the Koryak Reserve: the largest spawning grounds for salmonids; colonies of seabirds; pastures of deer; endemic for the Koryak highland subspecies of a snow sheep; the Bering Sea walrus population; Elk; black-capped marmot; Gyrfalcon and other birds included in the Red Book of the Russian Federation.
What to see: the reserve is located in the little-inhabited region. It consists of two parts: the Parapolsky Dol, which is recognized as a wetland of an international importance and the Goven Peninsula - up to half a million waterfowl nestles here. The coast of the Bering Sea is inhabited by colonies of seabirds. You can see brown bears, foxes and sables in the reserve.
It is recommended to visit the hot hydrogen sulphide springs of Goven, recognized as the most beautiful springs in Kamchatka, with the water temperature of about + 37°C.
How to get there: the road to the Koryak district is not easy. This is the way for true lovers of adventure. The best time for trips to the reserve is August and September. The main settlement of Tilichiki is more than 1000 km away from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Passenger planes and helicopters (the price of a ticket for a plane is 860 rubles) fly here from Elizovo.
