Travelling in the Volga Region: Astrakhan Oblast

Geography

Astrakhan Oblast is an amazing and mysterious region attracting tourists with its location which implies a large fish catch. The great Russian Volga River and about 900 of its tributaries flow on the territory of the region; the region also has access to the largest closed reservoir of the planet - the Caspian Sea. 

Transportation

There is an international airport in Astrakhan, a railway service is well developed here, roads and waterways are laid everywhere. The main navigable rivers of the region are Volga, Akhtuba, Bakhtemir, Bolda, Buzan, Kizan, Tsarev. 


Climate

The climate in Astrakhan Oblast is continental and dry. There is little snow in winter,thaws are frequent, besides, there are also frosts that come from the Urals. The average winter temperature is -5 ...- 9 ° C. Summers are hot, there are not many rains during this season. The air temperature gets up to +25 ° C. The most part of the precipitation falls from April to July, thunderstorms with hail can occur in summer.

Orthodox landmarks


Not only fans of active recreation and fishing come to Astrakhan Oblast, Orthodox people also come here, because the region is rich in churches and cathedrals. The most significant Orthodox landmarks of the region were built back in the 16th century. The Men’s Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Saviour in Astrakhan, the Church of Peter and Paul of the 17th-18th centuries, buildings in the village of Cherny Yar, Vysokogorsky Monastery of St. Nicholas on Churkinskyisland (late 19th century), etc. 

Fishing


However, fishing still is a favorite hobby of local tourists, and the best conditions were created here for this hobby. A large and diverse catch can be obtained duinrg fishing trips to “SchuchyHouse” (“Pike House”) in the Volga delta: in addition to the large catch and the picturesque landscape, tourists will enjoy comfortable rooms and excellent food. The unique lands of the Verkhne-Uglyanskoe Fishing and Hunting Centre on the bank of the Akhtuba River are called “The Heart of the Region”. The lovers of outdoor activities are offered boat trips along Volga, horseback riding and hiking trips.
