Ecotourism in Russia: State Nature Reserve "Utrish" (Krasnodar Region)
April 15, 2019 18:22

Location

The State Nature Reserve Utrish is located in the northwestern part of the Black Sea coast, in the Western Caucasus, an area dominated by foothill and lowland landscapes. This natural location has a large number of forests. The reserve is located on the Abrau peninsula, about 100 meters from the Kerch Strait, which separates the Black Sea from the Azov Sea. The closest cities to the reserve are Anapa and Novorossiysk.

On the plots of land and water space adjacent to the reserve, a protective zone has been created by the order of the Government of Russia.

Climate

Since the climate here is close to the Mediterranean, the summer on the territory of the reserve is usually hot and dry, and the winter is relatively warm. Most rains and other precipitations fall in November, December and January, and the driest months are May and August.

Flora and Fauna

The North-Western Caucasus is a unique region in terms of wealth and originality of flora and fauna, which must be preserved. Therefore, the creation of a reserve here is quite logical.

Utrish forest amazes with its beauty and diversity, such valuable tree species as hornbeam, fluffy oak, maple, linden, ash  are widely represented here. The territory of the reserve is 10008 hectares, where you can see 20 species of insects included in the Red Book.

As for the wildlife of the reserve, it is also very diverse. Start with the fact that here you can meet 65 species of protected insects. In both clusters - Abraussky and Sheskharissky - 12 species of insects are listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation, 32 species are listed in the Red Book of the Krasnodar Territory. More than 30 species of birds live here, some of which are rare, found only in forests of subtropical type, in the foothills and low mountain ranges. Many mammals inhabit the territory of the Utrish Reserve - squirrels, several species of hares, roes, foxes, bears, large colonies of raccoons, various species of rodents, and many others.

Nature

Amazing nature of Utrish Reserve attracts the attention of not only tourists, but also local and federal officials. Not so long ago, in 2008, it became known that a decision was made to eliminate the Bolshoi Utrish reserve and it is planned to transfer the protected areas to developers for the construction of a resort and entertainment complex. Needless to say that any construction here will cause irreparable harm to the unique natural system, which exists precisely as an integral single animal-plant "ensemble". Public intervention prevented the destruction of the reserve, but the road was  built.

How to get there

At the moment, the reserve is a fully protected area, which can not be reached without a special pass. Special routes are being developed for those who love ecotourism. Since this is a novelty here, the exact cost of the routes and their specific content should be coordinated with the management of the reserve.

Address: Abrau Peninsula, Krasnodar Territory.
