The Bolshekhekhtsirsky Reserve (Khabarovsk Territory, Russia) stretched along the Great Khekhtsir ridge, which is only a few dozen kilometers far from Khabarovsk, in its suburban area, so it is not difficult to reach this beautiful place.

The Bolshekhtshirsky Reserve was founded in 1963 in order to preserve the surrounding natural resources and diverse wildlife. Many representatives of this wildlife are increasingly disappearing from the face of the earth. The area of the Bolshekhtshirsky Reserve is more than 45 thousand hectares, 12 thousand of which are under protection. The protected area is limited in the west by the Ussuri River, and by the Chirka River in the south and south-west. In the east and northeast, the border runs along the inhabited areas of the suburbs of Khabarovsk.

Flora and fauna of the Bolshekhekhtsirsky Reserve

Bolshekhekhtsirsky is the richest nature reserve, which absorbed many species of flora and fauna of the Far East of Russia. More than 1000 species of  plants and about 1000 species of mosses and lichens grow in the reserve. Most of the territory is occupied by dense forests. Various types of birch, maples, limes, elms, fir trees, bird cherry trees, Amur velvet, Manchurian walnut, Mongolian oak grow here side by side. Creepers and prickly plants give the forest a similarity to the tropical jungle, but as the vegetation rises from the foothills to the tops of the mountains, you can observe with your own eyes the changes in vegetation from coniferous and broad-leaved to dark coniferous.

The Bolshekhekhtsirsky Reserve is famous for its population of such rare species as the Himalayan bear and the Amur tiger, which is generally incredible considering how close the reserve is to the city.

The diversity of the inhabitants of the reserve is amazing. There are 8 species of reptiles, 6 species of amphibians, 50 species of mammals, 224 species of birds and 45 species of fish. On the territory of the reserve you can find red deer, musk deer, wild boar, sable, column, harz, raccoon dog, lynx.
