Explore Karelia: “Ruskeala Express” Tours

Non-stop train carriages between Moscow and the city of Sortavala in Karelia will be launched from July 12 to September 9. The carriages (compartment and sleeping seats) will run between the cities, departing and arriving in Moscow as a part of the long-distance train No. 18/17 Moscow-Petrozavodsk.

The carriages will depart from Moscow on a daily basis (except July 17, 18, 19, 28 and August 5 and 15) as part of train No. 18/17 at 9:05 p.m. and arrive at Sortavala station at 2:35 p.m. of the next day. On the way back, the passengers will depart at 3:29 p.m., arriving in Moscow at 8:53 a.m. The total travel time between Moscow and Sortavala will up about 17.5 hours.

The train on the way from Petrozavodsk to Sortavala will stop at the following stations: Petrozavodsk Freight Station, Tomitsy, Chalna-Onezhskaya, Padozero, Villagora, Syanga, Essoila, Imatozero, Novye Peski, Zastava, Verkko, Suojarvi, Piitsjoki, Loimola, Raikonkoski, Lennyasyrya, Janisjarvi , Matkaselkya, Kaalamo, Helylä.

As previously reported, the Ruskeala Express daily train on steam locomotive traction will depart to one of the main attractions of Karelia, the mountain park of Ruskeala, from the station of Sortavala beginning from June 1.



The interior of the train is designed in the style of the end of the late 19th-early 20th centuries; it consists of three carriages: two compartment carriages with 91 seats and a dining carriage offering drinks and pastries made according to local recipes.

The retro trains spend one hour on the travel; it departs from the Sortavala station everyday at 10:40 a.m. and arrives at the Ruskeala mountain park at 11:40 a.m.; in the opposite direction the train departs at 5:30 p.m. and arrives at Sortavala station at 6:30 p.m.



The schedule of the “Ruskeala Express” was developed taking into account the convenient transfer to the high-speed “Lastochka” train going from the St. Petersburg to Sortavala. “Lastochka” train departs from the Finlyandsky Railway Station everyday at 6:15 a.m., arriving in Sortavala at 10:20 a.m. The train departs from Sortavala at 6:42 p.m., arriving at the Finlyandsky Railway Station at 10:43 p.m. on the same day.
