Azas is a state natural reserve located in the Todzha kozhuun of the Tuva Republic. The attraction was founded in 1985 on the basis of a protected natural zone of republican significance. The purpose of creating the reserve was to maintain, as well as study the unique ecosystems and surrounding mountains. The total area of the protected zone reaches 90 thousand square km, the territory of the reserve itself is 300 390 hectares. Now the reserve is part of the association of nature reserves and national parks of the Altai-Sayan ecoregion. Azas wildlife The fauna of the reserve is typical for the regions of the Altai-Sayan mountain region. Today it is represented by 51 species of mammals: 17 - rodents, 13 - carnivores, 10 - insectivores, 7 - artiodactyls, 2 - bats, 2 - lagomorphs. Three species of the animals available here are listed in the Red Book of Russia. These are forest reindeer, snow leopard and Tuvan beaver. The Tuvan beaver is considered the most interesting of them. During the work of the organization, the number of these mammals increased more than 3 times and stabilized by the end of the last century at the level of 75 individuals in 20 settlements. The attraction plays a special role in the protection of endangered species and in the preservation of the number of the main hunting and game animals. Cedar, deciduous, moss and mountain taiga forests grow on the territory of the reserve. In general, the forest occupies 73%, alpine placers and mountain tundra - 16%. The rest of the plots are swamps, meadows, steppes, and reservoirs. Weather The microclimate in the basin and, accordingly, on the territory of the reserve is moderately humid, sharply continental. It is characterized by north-westerly winds that carry humid Atlantic air. Humidification is formed by precipitation resulting from abundant evaporation from local water bodies. Winters here are cold and windless, with a minimum air temperature of -54 C. Summers are cool with light frosts and last for 2 months. The average temperature in January reaches -28.7 C, in July - +14 C. The duration of the frost-free period is about 2 months. Snow cover lasts about 5 months on average. In the low mountains, its height is 2530 cm, in the middle mountains - about 80 cm. Geography of the Azas reserve The sight is located in the area of the former cover glaciation and is the standard of the mountain landscapes of northeastern Tuva. There are amazingly beautiful high-mountainous reliefs with volcanoes, circuses, canyons, mineral springs and numerous lakes. All water bodies of the reserve belong to the basin of the Bolshoy Yenisei River. There are 2 large rivers on the protected lands: Azas (in the center) and Sorug (in the north-eastern side). In total, there are 30 large rivers and about 100 small lakes on the territory, most of which are of glacial origin. All Azas rivers are typically mountainous, with clean and very transparent water. They are rich in clamps, rapids and waterfalls. The geological structure of the reserve includes Paleozoic and Proterozoic rocks - conglomerates, sandstones, limestones, gneisses, crystalline schists, porphyrites, granite intrusions. In the east, they are closed by a huge layer of tuffs and basalts.
