At the end of the XIX century, thick forests on the territory of the Russian Island were cut down to the root, inconspicuous batteries appeared everywhere with the majority of communications located underground.


There are no ancient monuments in the city, but there is a Palace of Culture which is compared with the Concert Hall named after Tchaikovsky. Artyom was founded in 1924 as a miners settlement. A district in the historical centre of Vladivostok is called Millionka.

Vytegra and its surroundings attract tourists with their ancient northern architecture, clear waters of Lake Onega and the possibility to pass the rivers of Vologda region that are full of rapids on catamarans.


Gvardeysk, just like Kaliningrad, is often called by its prewar German name - Tapiau. It was founded by the Prussians.


The old German name of the town is Neuhausen, which means new houses. The official date of birth of Neuhausen is the year 1292. Then an earthen fortification and a fortress were built under Königsberg by the orders of the Bishop Christian von Mulchhausen.


The small provincial town of Kingisepp attracts tourists with its rich history, ruins of the ancient fortress, cosy streets with preserved ancient buildings and a regular layout.
