Hi, I wonder if your site can list/suggest the name of the most famous russian folk music CDs or records ever released. I love russian folk music, especially solo singing and the choral women's singing etc. Having a good lists of these can help me to begin my collection?

Hey Liz Nicol! Do you mean Russian wooden spoons? In Russian they are called "lozhki". Here is an article http://www.russia-ic.com/culture_art/traditions/512/

Thank you for information on folk songs and folk groups. I am working on a Masters degree in Ethnomusicology, specializing in Russian folk music at San Diego State U. I have studied Russian for 2 years. I have 3 questions: 1) Do you know of anyone who has developed a song cycle of songs about the usual life of a girl growing up in 19th century Village Peasant Russia, perhaps in Northern Russia. The song cycle could include songs about the young girl, songs about the girl becoming a woman, getting married and having children and then singing lullabies to her child and perhaps a song about the elderly woman. I know that there are songs for the "wedding play," However, I was thinking about songs throughout a woman's life 2. Do you know if anyone is currently singing Russian wedding laments? If so, how could I find out about it? 3. If I traveled to Russia, how could I study with a expert on Russian folk music or at least find out when folk groups would be performing so that I could listen to the performances for a few weeks in August 2009? Thank You.

I am a second year student and I attended a performance of Russian Folk Dance and Music. I require to conduct a "cultural encounter", as part of a Cultural Anthropology class. Which brings me to why I am contacting you. I wondered if perhaps you can assist me in completing my report by answering a few questions? Quest #1: In Russia, why are the traditional dances and music performed? Quest #2: In Russia, who typically takes part in the traditional dances and music celebrations? Are these performances held regularly? Quest #3: What meaning do these performances hold for those who participate in the performance? I thank you for your art and for your consideration is assisting me in this report. Thank you.

in 1961 while in Japan I bought a 3-record collection of songs by the Moscow Chorus. I had studied and sung some of the songs and I fell in love with those records. I loaned that boxed set of records to a person a couple of years ago. He left the state without returning them. I have looked on Amazon.com, EBAY, etc. on the web and cannot locate a similar set of records. Can someone assist me? Thanks
